Whatmough SIGNATURE SERIES 4-Way Floor Standing Speakers - The PROGENY
The Progeny is the latest expression of Whatmough's uncompromising approach to the pursuit of sonic excellence. The Progeny was the result of an intense research and development project to create a speaker that shared the same DNA as the flagship Paragon but packaged it into a more compact form to cater to a wider variety of listening rooms.
As with our flagship Paragon, a ‘zero compromise' approach was taken with regards to everything from component selection through to the manufacturing process itself. The Progeny was designed and built from the ground up to please the most dedicated music aficionados. Each pair is meticulously hand crafted in Australia and then rigorously tested and tuned to guarantee they meet Whatmough's exacting standards for sound and build quality.
The Progeny delivers stunning dynamics without compromising subtle musical nuances. Music comes to life with articulate detail, clarity, smoothness and tonal balance. Imaging and depth is also superb and helps convey a true sense of performance intention.
The careful design and component selection found in the Progeny enhance its flexibility as a loudspeaker capable of catering to a wide variety of musical genres. Jazz, classical, blues, rock and even the most captivating vocal performances are conveyed with a sense of purpose and emotion where even brief listening sessions feel like musical events.
Cabinetry
The Progeny's cabinets are offered in a choice of bespoke painted or veneered finishes. Painted options encompass a multitude of colours and gloss levels, and veneered options offer a choice of real timber veneer on the side panels with a choice of paint finish on all other exposed surfaces. The cabinets are up to 32mm thick in critical areas and feature extensive internal bracing, acoustic chambering and dampening control materials. Each of these design elements are critical to minimise resonance and create an extremely inert environment for the drivers to operate in.
The Progeny is a 4-way overall configuration combining a passive 3-way upper enclosure and an active sub bass lower enclosure. Each cabinet section is slot ported and chambered to ensure cohesive musical reproduction. The upper and lower sections are internally isolated and carefully designed to prevent resonances and colouration that could otherwise affect the performance of each section.
Drivers
The Progeny utilises one of the world's best tweeters, the legendary ring radiator. Each tweeter is handmade and then computer matched to provide the ultimate in performance and sonic consistency. A wave guided centre plug, large neodymium magnet structure and extended frequency response beyond 40kHz, a full octave above most conventional dome tweeters, result in remarkable speed, accuracy, smoothness and openness. A 100mm Polyglass midrange driver with an extremely low cone mass (just 4 grams) produces stunning clarity, transient response, tonal accuracy and imaging. A 165mm proprietary bass driver with large (33mm), high temperature, voice coil and double magnet system delivers upper bass frequencies with stunning dynamics, speed and precise control.
The Progeny's lower enclosure houses a 250mm sub bass driver coupled to a high quality 240 watt RMS class A/B amplifier with toroidal transformer. This driver has an extremely long cone excursion of up to 36mm and boasts a large, high temperature, voice coil (76mm) and magnet structure. The cabinet's acoustic filters are designed to coordinate the driver's front and rear wave as closely as possible and dramatically reduce the harmonic distortion often found in other subwoofers.
Crossover Networks
The Progeny's crossover networks comprise an advanced passive unit found in each loudspeaker as well as an active unit in each sub bass amplifier. Each passive crossover is housed behind the rear terminal plate and is completely enclosed and isolated from the rear radiation of the drivers to minimise the effects of resonance on the components.
These beautifully designed, hand built, crossovers contain air cored inductors made from the highest purity copper and premium quality polypropylene film capacitors. All components are painstakingly point-to-point hardwired and carefully positioned to avoid undesired interactions. The active crossover in the sub bass amplifier is adjustable to achieve the optimal sound balance in any listening environment.
Internal Wiring
The use of premium quality components carries all the way through to the Progeny's internal wiring. Frequency optimised Cardas (USA) cable is used exclusively for all driver to crossover and crossover to binding post connections. This advanced cabling is made up of individually insulated conductors configured according to a patented Golden Ratio design which helps reduce sound anomalies including midrange glare and bass colouration.
Binding Posts & Spikes
The Progeny features Cardas (USA) solid copper binding posts that are silver plated and Rhodium coated to provide the best connection possible and are considered by many to be the world's best. For optimum performance the upper enclosure can be tri-wired or even tri-amped.
Oversized, hardened, spikes are used to provide a precise rigid coupling to the floor. The spikes pass through solid steel girders that are bolted to the bottom plinths of the speakers. They are positioned beyond the extremities of the enclosure and are easily adjustable to provide maximum stability.
