Description
Volumio Primo Hi-Fi Edition Network Streamer
The original Primo Hi-Fi Edition remains on the Australian list as the entry point to Volumio hardware, combining the Volumio music platform with onboard ESS conversion and high-resolution USB digital output.
This is the oldest Primo still ranged locally, so its role is now quite different from Primo V3 and Primo Plus. It makes sense as the lower-cost way into the Volumio interface when the goal is straightforward network playback rather than the newest DAC architecture or advanced preamp functions.
The Hi-Fi Edition supports local and network libraries, internet radio and major streaming services, with analogue output from its onboard ESS DAC and USB digital output for a compatible external converter.
Entry into Volumio Hardware
A lower-cost network source with onboard DAC
The original Primo is suitable for an established amplifier that simply needs a streamer added. It keeps setup compact and gives the customer the same broad Volumio control concept as the more recent hardware.
Use the Internal DAC or USB Output
A simple upgrade path remains open
The internal DAC handles analogue playback, while USB digital output supports higher-resolution playback into a separate DAC. That means the unit can still serve as the network source if the analogue side of the system is upgraded later.
Current Range Position
Best bought for value rather than the newest hardware
Primo V2, V3 and Plus progressively add newer processing, conversion and system-control features. The original Primo earns its place when price is the priority and the simpler feature set already covers the system.

The Audio Experts Take
At $699, the original Primo has a much clearer job than it did at full price: get Volumio into an existing system without spending V3 money. We would not choose it over V3 for a new high-end analogue front end, but as a straightforward network source for an integrated amplifier it remains commercially useful while stock lasts.
If the customer is likely to upgrade the DAC later, the USB output keeps the box relevant beyond its internal converter.
