Description
Sonos Beam Ultra Dolby Atmos Soundbar
Sonos Beam Ultra is a compact Dolby Atmos soundbar designed for TVs up to around 65 inches, combining true 7.1.2 spatial audio, improved dialogue clarity, stronger bass and the flexibility to grow into a larger Sonos home theatre system without taking over the room.
Beam Ultra keeps the compact footprint that made Beam easy to live with, but the acoustic platform is substantially more ambitious. Sonos uses nine Class-D amplifiers, five tweeters and four low-profile woofers, including dedicated upward-firing drivers for Dolby Atmos height information. The result is a soundbar aimed at customers who want a genuine step up from basic TV audio without moving to the larger Arc Ultra.
True 7.1.2 Dolby Atmos from a Compact Soundbar
Height information without a full speaker package
Beam Ultra supports Dolby Atmos through dedicated upward-firing drivers, with Sonos describing the system as true 7.1.2 playback. That gives the soundbar more room to place effects above and around the listening position than a conventional front-firing bar.
As with any soundbar, the room still matters. Ceiling height, seating distance and room symmetry all influence how convincing the Atmos presentation will be. Beam Ultra is at its best when it has some breathing room around it and a reasonably reflective ceiling above, rather than being boxed into deep cabinetry.
Nine-Driver Acoustic Architecture
More separation, stronger bass and a clearer centre image
Inside Beam Ultra are five tweeters and four low-profile woofers, each driven by its own Class-D amplifier channel. Two horn-loaded side-firing tweeters widen the front soundstage, while two upward-firing tweeters handle spatial information and a dedicated forward-firing tweeter anchors dialogue through the centre.
The low-profile woofers are designed to produce more bass than the previous Beam without turning the cabinet into a much larger product. For many lounge rooms that will be enough on its own. If the system needs more weight and impact, Beam Ultra can be paired with a compatible Sonos Sub or Sub Mini later.
AI Speech Enhancement and Night Sound
Better dialogue control for real-world viewing
AI Speech Enhancement is one of the more practical additions. Sonos uses voice detection to improve dialogue intelligibility, with four selectable levels in the Sonos app. That gives you more control than a simple on/off dialogue mode and is useful when films have aggressive effects or when background noise in the room makes speech harder to follow.
Night Sound reduces the intensity of loud effects while lifting quieter detail, which is useful when you want to watch later in the evening without constantly riding the volume control.
Trueplay Room Tuning
Optimised for the room rather than a generic factory curve
Trueplay analyses the room acoustics and adjusts Beam Ultra to suit the space. Sonos supports Trueplay setup from compatible iOS and Android devices, making room tuning accessible without specialist measurement gear.
Trueplay is worth using, but placement still comes first. Keep the front and side firing areas clear, avoid pushing the soundbar too far back into a cabinet, and leave the upward-firing section unobstructed so the height channels can work properly.
HDMI eARC and Straightforward TV Integration
One HDMI connection and your existing remote
Beam Ultra connects to the TV through HDMI eARC or ARC using the included HDMI cable. eARC is the preferred connection when you want access to the highest-bandwidth audio formats including Dolby TrueHD and compatible Dolby Atmos streams.
Once connected, your existing TV remote can control volume, and the Sonos app guides the setup process. An optical connection is possible with a separately available adapter, but HDMI eARC is the better choice where the TV supports it.
Wi-Fi 6, Bluetooth 5.3 and AirPlay 2
Useful as a music speaker as well as a TV soundbar
Beam Ultra supports Wi-Fi 6, Bluetooth 5.3 and Apple AirPlay 2, so it can operate as part of the wider Sonos music system when the TV is off. Bluetooth is useful for quick direct playback, while Wi-Fi remains the better route for multi-room operation and higher-quality network streaming.
USB-C can be used for compatible accessories including the Sonos Line-In Adapter or Combo Adapter. Ethernet is therefore available through the optional Combo Adapter rather than a dedicated RJ45 socket on the soundbar itself.
Built to Grow into a Full Sonos Home Theatre
Add a subwoofer or surrounds when the room and budget allow
Beam Ultra can begin as a standalone soundbar and later be expanded with a compatible Sonos subwoofer and rear surrounds. That makes it a strong option when the immediate priority is cleaner TV sound but the long-term plan may include a more immersive surround system.
Sonos also supports TV Audio Swap with compatible Sonos headphones, allowing TV audio to move from the soundbar to the headphones when private listening makes more sense.

Important Notes
- Dolby Atmos performance depends on compatible content, the TV connection and the room.
- HDMI eARC is recommended for the widest format compatibility.
- The upward-firing section should not be obstructed if you want the strongest Atmos height effect.
- Subwoofer and surround speakers are sold separately.
- Ethernet and analogue line-in require compatible optional Sonos adapters.
- Beam Ultra is not compatible with CCFL-backlit TVs manufactured approximately between 2004 and 2012.
The Audio Experts Take
Beam Ultra looks like a straightforward soundbar upgrade, but the more important change is that Sonos has pushed a genuinely more ambitious acoustic layout into the same sort of footprint that made Beam so easy to recommend for normal living rooms.
The dedicated upward-firing drivers and wider side-firing arrangement give it a much better chance of creating convincing scale than a conventional compact bar, while AI Speech Enhancement addresses one of the most common reasons people replace TV speakers in the first place: dialogue that disappears as soon as the soundtrack gets busy.
For a small to medium room, Beam Ultra makes a lot of sense as a standalone product. If you later want deeper bass or more convincing rear information, adding a Sonos subwoofer and surrounds is a cleaner upgrade path than replacing the whole system. We would still pay attention to placement and TV compatibility before installation, particularly if the soundbar is going into cabinetry or being wall-mounted.
