Description
Rega RB220 Tonearm
Precision crafted, hand assembled Rega tonearm with ultra low friction bearings and three point mounting
The Rega RB220 is one of those deceptively simple upgrades that can make a turntable feel like it grew up overnight. It is hand assembled, built around Rega’s custom one piece aluminium arm tube, and engineered for extremely low friction movement so the cartridge tracks the groove cleanly and consistently. The goal is not complexity for its own sake, but control: better tracking stability, lower mechanical noise, and more information retrieved from the groove.
Rega’s tonearm design focuses heavily on bearing accuracy. Their approach is to achieve near frictionless movement horizontally and vertically while keeping free play in the bearing assemblies as close to zero as possible. In real listening terms this helps timing, image stability and low level detail, because the stylus is not fighting random bearing movement when it is trying to trace microscopic groove modulations.
Key features that matter
One piece aluminium arm tube
The RB220 uses a custom one piece aluminium arm tube, manufactured to optimise rigidity and reduce stress on the bearing assemblies. A clean, stiff arm tube helps the cartridge stay stable, improving tracking and reducing resonance.
Ultra low friction polymer bearings
Rega use ultra low friction polymer bearings (patent pending) and assemble each RB220 with custom tools and controlled torque settings. This precision assembly is aimed at consistent, repeatable performance and accurate tracking.
Three point mounting system
Rega’s three point mount improves rigidity at the arm base and simplifies installation on compatible Rega decks. It is also the standard for many Rega arm upgrades and replacements.
Adjustable bias with Rega anti skate design
The latest RB220 includes adjustable bias and a Rega designed bias system intended to maintain even tracking as the arm moves across the record. This improves compatibility with a wider range of cartridges and helps reduce setup errors.
Compatibility and fitting notes
- Direct replacement: Will directly replace other Rega tonearms that use the three point mounting system without modification
- Other turntables: If fitting to a different brand turntable or an older Rega with a single point nut fixing, use the supplied mounting template for correct positioning and drilling
- Critical geometry: Spindle centre to arm hole centre must be 222 mm
- Arm mounting pillar hole: Requires 25 mm diameter for correct clearance
- Clearance check: Ensure the arm clears the lid and that there is at least 250 mm clearance from arm hole centre to the inside front of the turntable
Setup notes for best tracking
- Balancing: With cartridge fitted and aligned, set the bias slider to 0, then adjust the balance weight until the stylus “floats” about 1 mm above the record
- Tracking force: Apply tracking force by rotating the balance weight forward. Half a turn (180 degrees) equals 1 gram. A full turn equals 2 grams
- Recommended setting: Set tracking force to the upper limit of your cartridge manufacturer’s recommended range
- Bias: Set the bias slider to the same number as your chosen tracking force
Care and warranty
This is a precision crafted product with delicate low mass parts. Do not remove or tamper with any parts of the tonearm. Rega provide a lifetime limited warranty against manufacturing defects, and unauthorised modification may invalidate warranty coverage.
