The AVC-X4800H sits in a useful part of Denon's range for customers who want a serious home theatre receiver without jumping straight to an eleven-channel or thirteen-channel chassis. It provides nine channels of onboard amplification, but its processing and pre-outs extend to 11.4 channels, so the system can grow by adding a suitable external two-channel power amplifier.

That distinction is important. Used on its own, the X4800H is well suited to layouts such as 5.1.4 or 7.1.2. Add two channels of external amplification and it can run an 11-channel speaker layout such as 7.1.4 while retaining four independently addressable subwoofer outputs.

Denon rates the AVC-X4800H at 125W per channel into 8 ohms from 20Hz to 20kHz at 0.05% THD with two channels driven. The receiver contains nine discrete power-amplifier channels, while its processing and multichannel pre-outs support up to 11.4 channels.

For a customer planning a 7.1.4 room, that means the receiver can remain the system control centre while a separate two-channel amplifier handles one pair of speakers. The preamp outputs also make it possible to offload important channels to external amplification later without replacing the AVR.

Four Independent Subwoofer Outputs

Better bass-system planning than a simple duplicated subwoofer socket.

Four independent subwoofer outputs allow multiple subwoofers to be configured and calibrated as separate channels. This is particularly useful in larger rooms where two or four subwoofers are being used to improve bass consistency across more than one seat.

Audyssey MultEQ XT32 is included for speaker and room calibration. The AVC-X4800H is also upgradeable to optional paid Dirac Live processing, with compatible Dirac bass-management and Active Room Treatment options available under the applicable licences. For a properly planned multi-subwoofer cinema, the calibration platform should be considered as part of the system design rather than as an afterthought.

8K HDMI for Modern Sources and Displays

Seven HDMI inputs and three HDMI outputs give the receiver room for a substantial source list.

All seven rear HDMI inputs support the current high-bandwidth video platform, including 8K/60Hz and 4K/120Hz signals. The HDMI system also supports HDR10, HDR10+, Dolby Vision, HLG, Dynamic HDR, VRR, ALLM and QFT, with eARC available for TV audio return.

Three HDMI outputs are useful in installations with a main display plus a secondary display or Zone 2 video requirement. As always with advanced gaming and 8K systems, source, display and HDMI cable capability all need to line up for the requested format.

Immersive Audio and Flexible Speaker Assignment

Dolby Atmos, DTS:X, Auro-3D and IMAX Enhanced cover the major immersive home theatre formats.

The X4800H provides flexible speaker assignment for height channels, bi-amping and multi-zone use. Eleven sets of speaker terminals make configuration easier even though a maximum of nine speaker channels can be amplified simultaneously from the internal power stages.

This flexibility is valuable in rooms that evolve over time. A system can begin as 5.1.4, move to 7.1.4 with an external amplifier, or allocate amplification differently for a second zone without replacing the central processor.

HEOS Built-in and Music Playback

The receiver can also serve as a network music hub rather than being limited to cinema sources.

HEOS Built-in provides network streaming and multi-room integration, with support for AirPlay 2, Bluetooth and network audio playback. Analogue connectivity includes a moving-magnet phono input, while two optical and two coaxial digital inputs help accommodate legacy sources.

The AVC-X4800H is designed and manufactured in Japan and includes the control connections expected in a more involved AV installation.

Its role is broader than a simple source switcher. Important Notes
