Description
Audio-Technica AT-LP5X Fully Manual Direct-Drive Turntable
The AT-LP5X is a fully manual, three-speed direct-drive turntable with Audio-Technica's J-shaped tonearm, factory-mounted AT-VM95E moving-magnet cartridge, built-in switchable MM/MC phono stage and USB output. It is a flexible choice for a proper two-channel vinyl system or for recording records to a computer.
The AT-LP5X updates the classic LP5 platform with an adjustable phono preamplifier and the widely supported VM95 cartridge family. The quiet direct-drive motor and substantial die-cast aluminium platter provide steady playback, while the damped chassis and heavy rubber mat help reduce vibration reaching the stylus.
With manual operation, the listener places and lifts the tonearm. There is no automatic return or Bluetooth transmission. In exchange, the AT-LP5X keeps the core analogue playback system straightforward and provides useful options for cartridge upgrades and system connections.
Direct-Drive Motor and Three-Speed Playback
33⅓, 45 and 78rpm without moving a drive belt
The DC servo motor directly drives the platter, eliminating the need for belt changes and offering convenient electronic speed selection. The deck plays 33⅓, 45 and 78rpm records. For 78rpm shellac discs, a suitable 78rpm stylus is required: the supplied AT-VM95E elliptical stylus is intended for modern microgroove records and should not be used as the 78rpm playback stylus.
J-Shaped Tonearm and VM95 Cartridge
Adjustable setup with a practical stylus upgrade path
The precision J-shaped tonearm uses a gimbal suspension and adjustable tracking force and anti-skate. The supplied AT-VM95E dual moving-magnet cartridge is mounted to an AT-HS6 removable headshell. The VM95 body accepts compatible replacement styli from the VM95 range, allowing a simple future upgrade without replacing the cartridge body.
The tracking force and anti-skate must still be set correctly during initial assembly. We recommend checking cartridge alignment, stylus condition and a stable support surface rather than assuming a turntable will perform at its best straight out of the carton.
Built-In MM/MC Phono Preamplifier
Connect to a phono input or a normal line input
The built-in phono stage supports MM and MC cartridge gain settings. Use the turntable's LINE output when connecting to a normal AUX or line-level input or suitable powered speakers. Select PHONO when feeding an amplifier or external preamplifier with a matching phono stage, avoiding two phono stages in series. The fitted AT-VM95E is an MM cartridge, so select the MM setting when using the internal stage with the standard cartridge.
USB Recording Output
Digitise favourite records on a computer
USB audio output supports 16-bit recording at 44.1kHz or 48kHz. That allows records to be captured using compatible computer software, while the analogue RCA connection can still serve a regular hi-fi system. Recording quality also depends on the record condition, correct tracking force and recording software setup.
Chassis, Platter and Placement
Reduce vibration before considering upgrades
The die-cast aluminium platter sits beneath a 5mm heavy rubber damping mat, on an anti-resonance chassis. The external AC adaptor keeps mains conversion outside the cabinet. Position the turntable on a firm, level surface away from large speakers and subwoofers to reduce feedback and skipping.

The Audio Experts Take
The LP5X is worth considering for anyone wanting a conventional hi-fi turntable with straightforward electronic speed changes and useful connection options. The included AT-VM95E is a strong starting point, and the compatible VM95 stylus range offers a practical upgrade path later.
We would spend the initial budget on correct setup, a stable support and good matching speakers before rushing into a cartridge change. The built-in phono stage is convenient if the amplifier does not already have one, while the USB connection is genuinely useful for archiving records. For customers who want automatic operation or wireless playback, another model will be a better fit; the LP5X is a manually operated hi-fi deck first.
